Since the 3G phase-out, the Belgian network (Proximus) operates on 2G, 4G, and 5G.
Devices without 4G or 5G access automatically fall back to 2G.
Why 2G may cause issues
2G is now a basic backup network:
- ✔️ Only supports calls and SMS
- ❌ Data connections are extremely slow or unusable
- ❌ Modern services like apps, VPN, MFA, VoWiFi, and UCaaS require 4G or 5G connectivity
Why do you need 5G
Having 5G access is more than just speed. A 5G subscription ensures:
- Optimized coverage: prevents the device from ever being stuck on 2G for data
- Access to modern network: automatically includes 4G, so your device uses 4G when 5G isn't available (instead of falling back to 2G)
- Future-ready: new services require 4G/5G connectivity. 2G won't receive further improvements
While we're expanding our national network coverage, you can access 5G across Belgium through our partnership with Proximus. If you need 5G coverage on our partner network while we expand our own, select a 5G option when ordering your subscription.

Why VoLTE matters
VoLTE allows calls to run over the 4G network instead of 2G. With VoLTE enabled:
- Calls stay on 4G: no fallback to 2G during calls and no potential 2G lock-in
- Better call quality: HD voice with faster call setup
- Data stays active: use internet during calls without interruption
